Castell de Vila-rodona

Castell de Vila-rodona is a 12th-century fortress crowning the town of Vila-rodona in the Alt Camp comarca, 80 kilometers south of Barcelona. This nearly millennium-old castle was built to defend the Hispanic March during the Middle Ages and offers commanding views across the comarca from its imposing keep, overlooking the Gaià River with the Montsant mountains visible to the west and the Tarragona plains extending to the south. Restored at the end of the 20th century, the castle remains perfectly habitable and is surrounded by vineyards, almond trees, and olive groves that are part of the protected designation of origin for Tarragona and Penedès wines, reflecting the owner family's recovery of the historic wine-making tradition.
