Castell de Verdera, also known as Sant Salvador de Verdera, crowns Verdera Mountain at 670 meters elevation, commanding panoramic vistas across L'Empordà toward the Pyrenees and extending east to the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and Cap de Creus. First documented in 904, the castle was assigned to Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery by Count Gausfred de Rosselló in 974. Count Ponç Hug commissioned reconstruction in 1283, resulting in the surviving Romanesque church and 13th-century structures including a rectangular tower and crenellated walls with seven alternating rectangular and semicircular turrets. The site remains accessible via hiking routes from Roses and offers one of Catalonia's most elevated and visually commanding castle positions.
