Castell de Teixells

The Mas de Sant Rafael, also known as Castell de Teixells, is a remarkably well-preserved fortified farmhouse in Cambrils dating to the 16th century. This rectangular building features two attached square towers, one of which housed an early chapel, and represents a distinctive form of coastal defense architecture. Built as a residential and agricultural center, the fortress served primarily to protect inhabitants from the frequent Saracen pirate raids that threatened the Catalan coast during this period. The site remains in excellent condition and continues as a private residence, embodying the practical medieval approach to combining domestic comfort with defensive necessity in vulnerable maritime communities.
