Castell de Petrer, built around the 12th century in the municipality of Petrer, Alicante, represents an exceptional example of Islamic architecture. This Muslim fortress, constructed at the end of the 12th century, played a strategic role controlling the vital passage connecting the Castilian plateau to the Mediterranean coast and overseeing the Vinalopó valley. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural protected monument in 1983, the castle is in excellent condition with the keep and imposing curtain walls clearly visible. Cave-houses built into the castle walls, recently restored, demonstrate medieval residential life, while the hilltop location provides spectacular views across the surrounding landscape.
