Castell de Perputxent in Lorcha, Alicante, evolved from an Islamic fortress called Barbuyan or Borbuchen, originally built as a residence for the rebel leader al-Azraq's lineage. Following James I's 1260 conquest, it was granted to feudal lords and subsequently transformed by the Order of Montesa from 1319 onward, adding palatial sections suited to medieval governance. The castle's Islamic foundation, Christian modifications, and later medieval embellishments reflect the region's complex cultural transitions. Currently owned by the Provincial Council of Alicante, the structure underwent significant conservation work to prevent deterioration of this valuable heritage site.
