Castell de Montpalau

Castell de Montpalau is a medieval castle ruin in Pineda de Mar, Barcelona, documented from the mid-11th century and later controlled by the viscounts of Cabrera until 1574. The site encompasses remnants of an ancient Iberian settlement dating to the 4th century BC, with stones reused in medieval construction, creating layers of historical occupation. The castle's feudal structure features a distinctive circular three-storey tower of homage, upper and lower walled enclosures with loopholed fortifications, a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael, courtyard, and cistern. Though now in ruins, significant portions of the upper enclosure walls remain at considerable height. Declared a cultural property of national interest, the castle showcases the evolution of medieval Catalan fortification design.
