Castell de Montesquiu

Castell de Montesquiu anchors a scenic park in Barcelona's foothills, dating to the 10th century and strategically positioned at the gateway to the Pyrenees. First mentioned in historical records in 895, the castle's territory once encompassed what are now the municipalities of Sant Quirze de Besora, Santa Maria de Besora, and Montesquiu, granted as a fief to the Besora family of county vicars. Medieval expansion continued through the 14th-15th centuries as the castle and lands passed through branches of the Besora and Canet families. Surrounded by lush gardens offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, the castle's interior today houses exhibitions and cultural events year-round, including art exhibitions, workshops, and festivals that provide insights into the region's historical and architectural heritage.
