Castell de Montagut

Castell de Montagut crowns the peak of Montagut within the Ardenya Massif, dominating the landscape of the Gironès region southeast of Llagostera. This 10th-or-11th-century fortress, documented in 966 as a strategic 'far' or fortification tower, displays characteristic circular-plan tower architecture with adjoining walled enclosures featuring defensive loopholes. Originally held by the Ros family and later sold to the powerful Peratallada lineage, the castle became property of the Bishop of Girona by the 14th century. Recent archaeological work beginning in 2021 has recovered and consolidated the fragmented remains. Declared a Cultural Property of National Interest, this hilltop sentinel represents centuries of Catalan feudal power and medieval communication networks.
