Castell de Millars

Castell de Millars in Madremanya has its roots in a Roman villa from antiquity—referenced in a 834 diploma from Louis the Pious as Miliasam villam, a property of the Bishop of Girona. During the Middle Ages, it was converted into a castle, with the Millars family documented from 1139, transforming it into a Gothic stronghouse during the 14th-15th centuries. The fortress was damaged during the 1485 Remença Wars but survived through the 17th-19th centuries as various noble families intermarried to hold it. In the mid-20th century, the marquis of Vilana commissioned architect Camil Pallàs to restore the castle, establishing its current appearance. Declared a cultural site of national interest, it represents a remarkable continuum from Roman settlement through medieval fortification to noble residence.
