Castell de Milany

Castell de Milany, positioned on the border of Vallfogona de Ripollès and Vidrà in Girona province, is a 9th-century Carolingian fortress mentioned in 10th-century documentation. Originally dependent on the Monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses following a 12th-century donation by Count Ramon Berenguer III of Barcelona, the castle later served as a stronghold for Remences rebels during the 1450s rebellion. Severe damage from earthquakes in 1427 and 1428 left the fortress in precarious condition, leading to eventual abandonment. Located at an altitude of 1,529 meters—the highest Catalan castle ever built—it remains heavily damaged with only stone walls surviving. Since 2011, archaeological excavation and consolidation campaigns have revealed construction phases and preserved what remains of this remarkable high-altitude fortress.
