Castell de Merola

Castell de Merola is a late 13th-century fortified tower in Puig-reig, overlooking the Llobregat River in the Berguedà comarca. Originally a rectangular defense structure standing 14.8 meters tall, the tower suffered severe damage from 16th-century tremors and collapsed into partial ruins. A modern restoration project by Carles Enrich Studio preserved the surviving medieval wall while inserting a wooden internal structure to stabilize and reinforce the remains. The restoration work included an internal staircase allowing visitor access to three original levels, demonstrating thoughtful conservation that respects the historical fabric while ensuring the tower's survival and accessibility for future generations.
