Castell de la Vilavella

Castell de la Vilavella, an Arab-period fortress dating to the 10th century, dominates the municipality of La Vilavella in Castellón. The castle was originally built to consolidate dispersed Muslim populations during the Islamic occupation and subsequently surrendered to James I of Aragón in spring 1238. Though the castle remains in deteriorated condition, restoration efforts in the surrounding zone have improved accessibility. The fortress offers spectacular panoramic views encompassing both mountain and sea landscapes, with visitors accessing the site via a path past the Stations of the Cross and a small chapel. Climbing to the castle provides an incredible vantage point overlooking extensive orange groves below, making it both a historical monument and a scenic overlook reflecting the region's agricultural heritage and medieval defensive priorities.
