Castell de la Tallada

Castell de la Tallada in La Tallada d'Empordà is a medieval fortress first documented in 1057 as property of the Count of Ampurias, then held by the Tallada family from 1128 onward. The castle's ownership changed several times through medieval history: it was conquered by the Count of Barcelona in 1385, returned to Joan I of Empuries in 1387, passed to the Viscount of Rocabertí in 1418, and finally returned to the crown in 1587. Though only partially preserved, visitors can trace the original defensive wall layout that enclosed the fortress. Six towers of varying chronology and construction remain standing, ranging from five to twelve meters in height, featuring different architectural styles from the 13th century (circular tower with sandstone) to the 16th century (circular towers with firearm loopholes in conglomerate stone), documenting centuries of military evolution.
