Castell de Guardamar del Segura

Castell de Guardamar del Segura stands as one of the great symbols of Guardamar del Segura, perched on a hill continuously occupied for nearly 3,000 years. The site shows evidence of multiple civilizations from the 8th century BC through the 19th century, including Phoenician, Iberian, Roman, Islamic, and Christian occupations. King Alfonso X established a medieval town here in the late 13th century with Catalan settlers featuring planned urban layout with streets, plazas, and residences surrounding the fortress. Artifacts discovered include terracotta incense burners with feminine faces, Roman votive objects including a bronze Mercury statue, and medieval ceramics. Earthquakes in 1829 devastated the castle and village, but ruins are designated as a Cultural Interest Site. Today visitors enjoy panoramic views and can participate in guided tours combining the castle with nearby archaeological sites.
