Castell de Beuda

Castell de Beuda, located in Beuda within the La Garrotxa comarca, is a 10th-century fortress built on ancient Roman foundations, exemplifying Catalonia's layered medieval history. Originally belonging to the county of Besalú and documented by Pope Sylvester II in 1002 confirming its holdings under the Bishop of Girona, the castle subsequently passed through various families of Catalan nobility across the centuries. The fortified structure is arranged around a central courtyard featuring a distinctive square tower with Gothic windows and spans approximately 2,000 square meters. Walls dating from the 10th century preserve interior details including Gothic reliefs, while the castle's quadrangular design reflects its enduring strategic importance. Now designated a Cultural Asset of Natural Interest, it stands as a testament to early medieval Catalan fortification.
