Castell de Barberà

Castell de Barberà occupies a hilltop position overlooking Barberà de la Conca in Tarragona, serving as a significant Templar and Hospitaler fortress. The castle was the seat of one of the oldest Templar commanderies in Catalonia, playing a central role in the military-religious orders' regional presence. Archaeological excavations in 1986 revealed the fortress's construction phases, including remains of a rectangular hall and Templar modifications to the original structure. Beneath the Palau Nou building, archaeologists discovered remains of an ancient Iberian settlement, adding depth to the site's historical layers. The castle represents a crucial link in medieval Catalonia's defensive infrastructure and religious-military heritage, now the focus of ongoing rehabilitation efforts by cultural associations dedicated to preserving Templar and Hospitaler history.
