Castell de Barberà

Castell de Barberà is a fortification located in Barberà del Vallès, approximately 17 kilometers northwest of Barcelona, dating from 1005 and bearing medieval architectural remnants from its long history. Documented from the 11th century, the castle was governed by the counts of Barcelona, with the Barberà family serving as castellans from around 1170. Ownership subsequently passed through several noble lineages including Ribes and Montcada families before Philip III of Spain granted it to the Garcerán de Pinós family, diversifying its political allegiances across centuries. Today little remains of the original fortress except the base of a circular tower and wall sections; most visible structures reflect 16th-17th century residential renovations and substantial 19th-century reconstruction. The site remains a significant cultural monument in the region, offering glimpses into medieval Catalan noble history.
