Castell d'Atzeneta is a mountain fortress located three kilometers from Atzeneta del Maestrat at approximately 500 meters altitude, positioned to control the strategic mountain passes near Sierra de Lucena. The castle served as a defensive gateway protecting population access through the passes of Atzeneta, which was considered the principal entry to the settlements. Designated as a Monument of Cultural Interest, the structure stands within El Castell municipal natural area comprising diverse Mediterranean woodland ecosystems with rosemary, lentisk, and abundant flora and fauna. The surrounding landscape features dramatic ravines called Les Torrocelles and Mas d'Avall, complementing the historic fortress within this scenic natural preserve.
