Castell d'Artana

Castell d'Artana is an Islamic fortress constructed atop Roman ruins, located beneath the town of Artana in the Plana Baixa region of Valencia. Conquered by Jaime I in 1238, the castle was subsequently transformed during the medieval Christian period into a seigniorial stronghold. Today, visitors can observe sections of defensive walls, a central keep, multiple towers, foundations, a historic cistern, and auxiliary structures. Recent archaeological investigations have revealed Iberian remains and suggest the current fortress architecture largely dates from the post-Conquest 13th century onward, offering insights into the region's layered Islamic and Christian heritage.
