Castell d'Ares del Maestrat rises dramatically on the Mola d'Ares mountain at 1,148 meters elevation in the Maestrat region of Castellón. Originally fortified by Iberian tribes and later rebuilt between the 13th and 15th centuries, this fortress was the first stronghold conquered by King Jaime I during the capture of the Kingdom of Valencia in 1232. Its strategic location on a rocky cliff provided crucial defense and surveillance over the mountainous landscape. The fortress's lookout tower saw final military use during the Spanish Civil War. Today, visitors can reach the castle via hiking trails and enjoy spectacular panoramic views across El Maestrat and surrounding mountains.
