Castell d'Amposta

Castell d'Amposta is a medieval fortress situated on a rocky elevation along the right bank of the Ebro River at Amposta's entrance in Catalonia. The municipality acquired it in 1983 to restore the urban space and install cultural facilities. The castle preserves significant medieval defensive structures including two concentric moats, with the inner moat carved into conglomerate rock and measuring approximately nine meters wide. The Tower of San Joan, built between the late 14th and mid-15th centuries, features rectangular stone masonry with defensive apertures. Semi-underground chambers from the 14th-15th centuries are organized around a central courtyard. Beyond military functions, the castle housed industrial operations including soap manufacturing in the 18th century and grain and rice mills in the 19th-20th centuries. Today it serves cultural and civic purposes for the community.
