Carrignacurra Castle

Carrignacurra Castle rises majestically on a rocky outcrop along the south bank of the River Lee, east of Inchigeelagh in County Cork. Built around 1575 by the O'Leary family to defend a historic ford, this five-storey tower house later fell to the O'Sullivan and McCarthy clans before passing to the Masters family in the 1700s. The castle features a spiral staircase, original gun loops, battlements and a distinctive 'murder hole.' Though abandoned by the 19th century, planning permission has been granted for its restoration as a private dwelling, preserving this riverside medieval landmark for future generations.
