Carriganass Castle

Carriganass Castle is a 16th-century tower house located approximately 8 kilometres northeast of Bantry in West Cork, near the village of Kealkill. Built around 1540 by Dermot O'Sullivan of the O'Sullivan Beare clan, the castle is a four-storey structure surrounded by a 4-metre outer curtain wall. Its name derives from the Irish 'Caisleán Charraig an Easa,' meaning 'The Castle on the Rock of the Waterfall,' reflecting its dramatic perch above the Ouvane River. The castle holds significant historical importance as a setting from which Donal Cam O'Sullivan Bere led his followers on a march to Leitrim in 1602, connecting to the Flight of the Earls. Designated a National Monument, it remains open year-round to visitors free of charge.
