Carrigaholt Castle stands at the mouth of the Moyarta River near the Loop Head peninsula in County Clare, overlooking the Shannon estuary. Built around 1480 by the MacMahon chiefs of the Corcabascin Peninsula, this five-storey tower house is among Ireland's best-preserved examples, featuring a walled courtyard and commanding views of the fishing village below. The castle witnessed military action in 1598 when Teige McMahon held it through a four-day siege by the Earl of Thomond, while today visitors can view the exterior from a locked gate.
