Carrigadrohid Castle

Carrigadrohid Castle stands dramatically on a rock outcrop in the middle of the River Lee, approximately 8 kilometres east of Macroom in County Cork. Built in 1455 by the MacCarthys of Muskerry to control river traffic and trade, this rare 15th-century island fortress was expanded with eastern and northern annexes. The castle witnessed significant historical events, including a 1650 siege by Cromwellian forces. It later became home to the Bowen family and has been maintained by a local conservation group, offering visitors a picturesque glimpse of medieval river fortification.
