Caerlaverock Castle

Caerlaverock Castle is an exceptional medieval stronghold near Dumfries, Scotland, distinguished by its unique triangular design—the only castle of its kind in Britain—featuring a protective moat, twin-towered gatehouse, and imposing battlements. Built in the 13th century and long held by the Maxwell family, the castle witnessed centuries of Border conflict between English and Scottish forces due to its strategic Solway coast location, until the last siege during the 1640 Covenanter wars. The ruins preserve a remarkably refined 17th-century Renaissance house called the Nithsdale Apartments within its walls, while visitors can explore an adjacent nature reserve revealing archaeological remains of earlier fortress structures. Now managed by Historic Environment Scotland, it remains available as a wedding venue.
