Bužim Old Town

Bužim Old Town centers around a historic fortress originally built in 1251, though its origins trace to the 12th century with significant expansions during the 14th and 15th centuries. Located in northwestern Bosnia's Una-Sana Canton, it was the second-largest medieval castle in the Cazinska krajina region after Bihać. The fortress architecture showcases a blend of Renaissance, Romantic, and Gothic styles reflecting diverse historical influences. Its design features a quadrilateral inner fortress with circular towers, while outer polygonal fortifications were added later for artillery defense. The site served multifunctional roles as city, castle, fortress, and religious center, with an 18th-century wooden mosque nearby that remains among the region's oldest preserved wooden structures.
