Burt Castle

Burt Castle, also known as O'Doherty's Castle, is a ruined fortress near Newtowncunningham in east County Donegal built between 1560 and 1580 by the O'Doherty clan, the "Lords of Inishowen." The castle's distinctive Z-plan design mirrored Scottish architectural styles, with a main tower flanked by smaller towers on opposite corners. The fortress witnessed significant historical events including the Spanish Armada period and the famous rebellion of Sir Cahir O'Doherty, and today commands panoramic views over Lough Swilly from its hillside location.
