Burgruine Steinschloß in Mariahof, Styria, is Austria's highest castle ruin, perched at nearly 1,200 metres elevation in the Alpine highlands. Constructed in the 12th century by the noble family "von Stein," the fortress commands panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and dramatic Alpine peaks. Located a 15-minute walk from the parking area, the site welcomes visitors year-round. Since 2000, the Burgruine Steinschloß association has scientifically conserved the remains, preserving this medieval stronghold that towers above the Lungau landscape along well-marked hiking trails through forested and rolling terrain.
