Bornem Castle, formally Marnix de Sainte Aldegonde Castle, stands beside the town of Bornem in Antwerp, overlooking the Oude Schelde river. The earliest fortifications date to the 10th–11th centuries, built to defend against Viking raids. Severely damaged during 17th-century wars, the original 16th-century structure was demolished in 1880, replaced by a late-19th-century mansion designed by architect Hendrik Beyaert. Owned by the De Marnix family since the 1770s, this country house retains its noble status and limited public access, opening selectively in August and September and by special guided tours, maintaining an air of private aristocratic heritage.
