Blacknor Fort

Blacknor Fort is a coastal defence fortress built between 1900 and 1902 on Portland's western side to overlook Lyme Bay and protect Portland Harbour and its naval facilities. Operational during both World Wars with two 9.2-inch guns, the fort witnessed significant military action, including involvement in the Slapton Sands operation of 1944. During the Battle of Britain, Flying Officer Strickland achieved a remarkable aerial victory in his Hurricane near the fort, with the damaged German bomber catching its undercarriage on the fort's telephone wires. Located at Blacknor Point on the Jurassic Coast, the fort remains a historical landmark and popular tourist attraction, offering visitors tangible connections to Britain's coastal defence heritage during the modern military era.
