Belcastel Castle is a dramatic medieval fortress perched on the steep banks of the River Aveyron in southern France. The castle's origins date to the 11th century, with its oldest foundations laid in the first half of that century and its distinctive silhouette completed by the 15th century. Originally occupied by the de Saunhac family, the castle fell into abandon during the 17th century but was masterfully restored between 1975 and 1982 by renowned architect Fernand Pouillon. Its magnificent restoration earned the village recognition as one of France's most beautiful villages in 1990. Visitors can freely explore the courtyards, medieval chapels, prison, moat, and gardens, while enjoying permanent and temporary art exhibitions within its historic walls.
