Bayard's Cove Fort

Bayard's Cove Fort is a Tudor-era fortification built between 1522 and 1536 by the borough of Dartmouth to defend the prosperous harbour town from naval attack. Designed as a second line of defence with eleven gunports for heavy artillery, the fort was positioned to engage enemy vessels that might penetrate the outer defences of Dartmouth and Kingswear castles. The site holds significance in early American history as the port where the Mayflower and the Speedwell (her sister ship) underwent repairs in 1620 before proceeding to the New World. After neglect during the 18th century, the fort was restored in the late 19th century and is now managed by English Heritage. Visitors can freely explore this well-preserved example of Tudor military architecture overlooking the River Dart.
