Batería de Urrutia

Batería de Urrutia is an 18th-century coastal defense fortification located at Punta del Boquerón in San Fernando, Cádiz, within the protected Cádiz Bay Natural Park. Named after General José de Urrutia, founder of Spain's Military Engineering Corps, the battery was constructed to defend the entrance to San Fernando Bay through the Caño de Sancti-Petri channel. Part of an integrated defensive system protecting the Sancti-Petri settlement alongside other batteries and the historic Castillo de Sancti-Petri, the structure played a significant role in 19th-century Spanish political upheavals, particularly during the 1823 campaign supporting King Ferdinand VII. Today, the fort remains partially overgrown with vegetation, its military courtyard and guard quarters still discernible amid the natural landscape.
