Barryscourt Castle

Barryscourt Castle near Carrigtwohill in County Cork is one of Ireland's finest examples of a medieval tower-house, built between 1392 and 1420 during the height of Norman power in southern Ireland. The castle features three impressive five-storey watchtowers overlooking its defences, with a dungeon once used to hold regional prisoners and criminals. The exceptionally restored First Floor Main Hall and Second Floor Great Hall now display the castle as it would have appeared in the 16th century, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into noble life during the medieval period. Originally the main seat of the powerful Barry family for six generations, the castle remains open year-round with guided tours accessing the upper chambers, providing comprehensive access to this architectural masterpiece.
