Barrys Castle

Barryscourt Castle, built between 1392 and 1420 by the Anglo-Norman Barry family, is one of Ireland's finest examples of a tower house fortress, standing among the largest of its architectural type. Located near Carrigtwohill in County Cork, this rectangular stronghold measures over 15 meters in length and represents centuries of Barry family dominance in eastern Cork. The castle witnessed pivotal moments in Irish history, including involvement in the 16th-century Desmond Rebellions, and in 1581 was damaged by its own inhabitants to prevent English forces from capturing it during military campaigns led by Sir Walter Raleigh.
