Balwearie Castle Tower

Balwearie Castle Tower, located 2.5 miles west of Kirkcaldy in Fife, is a 15th-century fortified tower belonging to the Scott family, one of Scotland's notable landed families. Built after 1463, the castle features impressive stonework with walls averaging 6 feet thick, measuring approximately 43 feet in length and 28 feet in breadth. The surviving structure includes the east gable wall and portions of the north and south walls rising about 45 feet, providing evidence of the tower's original defensive design. Balwearie gained legendary status as the supposed home of Sir Michael Scott, a renowned medieval mathematician and scholar with an international reputation for his intellectual and mystical knowledge. The tower remains an evocative ruin set within Fife's historic landscape.
