Baltersan Castle

Baltersan Castle near Maybole in Ayrshire, Scotland, is a 16th-century L-plan tower house begun in 1584 by David Kennedy of Pennyglen. Built for the prominent Kennedy family, this three-storey tower with attic exhibits sophisticated architectural features including sliding shutters at the second floor, a rooftop water collection system serving the kitchen, and a fine oriel window. The castle's construction followed the dramatic acquisition of surrounding lands from Crossraguel Abbey, and it stands as a 440-year-old testament to medieval Scottish design. Though probably abandoned around the mid-18th century and ruinous, the castle is Category A-listed and currently undergoing restoration, with plans to establish a music school and arts events venue on the site.
