Avançades de Sant Joan

The Avançades de Sant Joan represent sophisticated 17th and 18th-century military fortifications extending from the Sant Joan Castle of Tortosa, designed by Italian engineer Luis de Gandolfo in 1642 and constructed according to the advanced defensive principles of French engineer Sébastien Vauban. These advanced compounds feature multiple bastions flanked by barbicans, including a distinctive second compound and a third structure with a central drill ground whose barbicans visually dominate the surrounding ravines. Currently in excellent condition and signposted for visitors, the fortifications are accessible from the Suda's drill ground via stone steps with integrated lighting. A recent museification project has enhanced the site's educational value, allowing visitors to appreciate the sophisticated geometric design and strategic positioning that characterized European military architecture during the early modern period.
