Atalaya Castle

Atalaya Castle crowns a spur of the Sierra de la Villa northwest of Alicante, commanding the historic frontier between Castile and the Kingdom of Aragon. Built by the 12th century as an Almohad fortress and mentioned in Arab sources by 1172, the castle passed to Christian rule under James I in 1240 and subsequently through the hands of noble families including the Manuels and Pahechos. The 15th-century Pacheco family added structural elements that distinguish the fortress today, including additional tower floors and reinforced double-walled enclosures. The inner keep preserves a rare Almohad star-shaped ribbed vault, making it architecturally unique. Now designated a Cultural Heritage Site and Host to the annual Moros y Cristianos festival, the castle welcomes visitors to explore its medieval military design and layered cultural significance.
