Aspremont-Lynden Castle

Aspremont-Lynden Castle in Oud-Rekem, Lanaken, represents centuries of architectural evolution dating from the 10th century, though the current structure was built around 1595 by Count Herman d'Aspremont-Lynden in Mosan-Renaissance style. The castle features distinctive oval-shaped design refined through multiple phases of construction and features a protected setting guarded by the noble d'Aspremont-Lynden family, Counts of Reckheim. Beyond its aesthetic significance, the castle served varied roles including military hospital during French occupation (1792-1795), later functioning as a prison and psychiatric facility. Today, Aspremont-Lynden is accessible to visitors when exhibitions are held within its walls, and guests can dine at the restaurant situated in the castle's gate building.
