Ardvreck Castle

Ardvreck Castle is a ruined 16th-century fortress standing dramatically on a rocky promontory jutting into Loch Assynt in northwest Highland Scotland. Built around 1590 by the Clan MacLeod family, the rectangular keep originally comprised three storeys and guarded strategic approaches to the Firth of Clyde. The castle gained notoriety in 1650 when the Marquess of Montrose sought refuge here only to be handed over to his enemies by the castle keeper's wife. Now under free public access with no entry fee, visitors can explore the atmospheric ruins along the A837 from nearby Inchnadamph.
