Antoing Castle

Antoing Castle rises majestically on the right bank of the Scheldt, six kilometers south of Tournai, representing one of Belgium's most significant medieval fortifications with origins extending back to the 10th century. The castle evolved through centuries of strategic development, with stone fortifications added in the 12th century and major reconstruction undertaken by Jean de Melun between 1436 and 1452, who modernized defenses to accommodate artillery advances. Completely rebuilt in neo-Gothic style during the 19th century, the castle has been a primary residence of the Princes of Ligne family since 1634, when it entered their possession through marriage. Classified as Walloon heritage since 1949, this architectural masterpiece remains privately owned, with public access limited to organized tours arranged by the municipality of Antoing.
